Preparation is Key

Before your puppy arrives, set up a designated area with a crate, water bowl, and safe toys. This "den" will be their safe space during the critical first days.

Hour 1-6: The Arrival

Keep things calm. Allow your puppy to explore their designated area on their own terms. Resist the urge to overwhelm them with attention, toys, or introductions. Let them sniff, observe, and acclimate naturally.

Hour 6-24: Structure Begins

Start a simple routine: potty breaks every 2 hours, short play sessions, and crate training. Feed at consistent times. Every positive experience builds trust and confidence.

Hour 24-48: Building Confidence

Introduce basic commands like "sit" using treats and positive reinforcement. Begin short leash walks in your yard. Continue crate training with calm, positive associations. Remember: consistency is everything.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Over-stimulation with too many visitors
  • Allowing puppy to dictate the schedule
  • Skipping crate training
  • Expecting perfection too soon

These first 48 hours set the foundation for your relationship. Stay patient, stay consistent, and celebrate small wins.
