Why Body Language Matters
Dogs communicate primarily through body language. Understanding these signals helps you respond appropriately, prevent conflicts, and strengthen your bond.
Signs of a Relaxed, Happy Dog:
- Soft, slightly open mouth (the "dog smile")
- Relaxed ears in natural position
- Loose, wiggly body movements
- Tail wagging in broad, sweeping motions
- Play bow position
Signs of Stress or Anxiety:
- Whale eye (showing whites of eyes)
- Lip licking or yawning (when not tired)
- Ears pinned back
- Tucked tail
- Panting when not hot or exercising
- Avoiding eye contact
Warning Signs of Aggression:
- Direct, hard stare
- Stiff, rigid body posture
- Raised hackles (hair along spine)
- Bared teeth with wrinkled muzzle
- Low growl or snarl
- Tail high and stiff (not wagging)
Context is Everything
Never rely on a single signal. Look at the whole picture: ears, eyes, mouth, tail, and overall body tension. A wagging tail doesn't always mean friendly—context matters!
By learning to read your dog's language, you become a better handler and advocate for your dog's wellbeing.
